Cayn Borthwick’s latest single ‘Dance For Love’ is a post-apocalyptic love song cavorting with a hypnotic bossa nova groove.
The second single from Borthwick’s forthcoming album Big City Whispers is a classic crooner ballad – if the singer and his entire band drank the electric kool aid.
With ‘Dance For Love’ he turns his talents to the love song framework in the tradition of Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave. The track invokes 80’s Cohen but with Borthwick’s sensibilities. It opens with brooding bass, percussive guitar and deep vocals that soon erupt into an angelic chorus of voices (all Borthwick), swirling synths and gently swaying woodwinds.
It’s a stark contrast to first single ‘Lizard Brain’ but maintains his distinctive production style and provides a glimpse of the scope of the album to come.
‘Dance For Love’ was recorded by Cayn Borthwick at his Melbourne Studio and mixed by John Lee at Phaedra. His debut album Big City Whispers will be out through Lost and Lonesome on February 28, 2020.
A mesmerising, dub infused, post punk offering that just keeps sounding better with every listen. On the strength of this, I’ve been listening to their earlier stuff and they now already have a great catalogue, one of my favourite new discoveries…. Mt.Vic.Matt
