about

Cayn Borthwick’s debut single ‘Lizard Brain’ creeps out of the speakers like some blippy, trippy primordial ooze.

Sounding like it could provide the soundtrack to a neo-noir fever dream set in the cocktail lounge at a toxic waste dump, ‘Lizard Brain’ sets the scene for an album loaded with tropicana slow jams, washed out bossa novas and apocalyptic love songs, due out later this year.

The Melbourne composer and sax blaster is a stalwart of the local scene having played in groups as colourful and varied as NO ZU, Mighty Duke & The Lords and Sui Zhen, but Borthwick’s musical CV expands far beyond the live realm – he spent a year composing a piece every week for a Masters of Music, has created interactive sound art with Playable Streets, written for workshop with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and arranged for the Melbourne Ska Orchestra.

With ‘Lizard Brain’, Borthwick has put his compositional background to good use – across the sprawling track, paranoid electronic beats disintegrate in the face of a wailing saxophone, then return as a driving pulse supporting spasmodic synth, guitar and vocal bursts. With its hypnotic repetition, bent hooks and off-kilter pop moments, ‘Lizard Brain’ touches on Krautrock and nods to 80s DIY experimenters such as Roland Young.

'Lizard Brain' was recorded by Cayn Borthwick at his East Brunswick Studio and mixed by John Lee at Phaedra. The as-yet-untitled debut album will be out in late-2019 via Lost And Lonesome.
